As a culture, we race through life’s transitions… looking towards the next…not taking the time to be with them, in grief or celebration or anything in between. Be it childhood, passing thru puberty, marriage, divorce, death of a loved one….we pass through one stage of life to another without stopping long enough to recognize where we have been or where we are going. Invariably there comes a moment when we have to stop, to look within. I have always been drawn to be with people at those moments. For they tend to be life defining.
We have three things we can share with people in this life… their birth, their life and their death.
For years, I studied death and transition. All my coursework in both undergraduate and graduate was centered around the psychological, religious and spiritual issues surrounding transition. I wanted to be able to work with those transitioning and speak to them in their own personal language of understanding their transition and what would happen to them after they left this form.
I have had the privilege and honor to be with people that are entering transition and with those passing. There is something magical that happens. There is a moment that comes when emotions have run their course and all pretenses are dropped, when all but truth becomes petty, when true forgiveness happens; when the soul shines. It just shines.
I remember reading Ram Daas speaking of working with prisoners in death row. He saw in them what he called a 'situational spirituality' as they looked death in the face. There was no longer good or evil, right or wrong. There were only souls without pretense. They were not prisoners but people that had an urgent need to look inside, face their demons and come to a place of forgiveness.
I have always felt the desire to connect with people at the level where pretenses disappear. I have yearned in my life to touch others soul to soul, light to light.
I have now found a way to do so. It does not take someone having to transition from this world or be on death row. It only takes a deep desire for reaching the beautiful still place way inside under the emotions and pretenses of our lifes...the place of freedom.
Having a way to connect with another being on such a level brings me great joy and true humility. This is where the magic happens, where true healing takes place... physically, emotionally and spiritually. Souls can shine in life. We don't need to be faced with death to finally forgive and heal and feel.
Shine. Be free. All is good.
